  • Lessons learned by renowned Women in Photonics

    • On Wednesday, 21 april 2021

In 2015, the European Optical Society (EOS) launched the EOS Early Career Women in Photonics Award to honor a young female scientist who has made outstanding contributions to photonics. Since launching the awards, EOS has closely followed the career paths of the winners.

We will now share with you the backgrounds, motivations and individual career paths of the winners along the years, with priceless advice and guidance for those who follow in their footsteps. A clear consensus derived from the individual discussions with the women and the advice to others persuing a career in photonics is clear: "Work hard and focused, be brave and network every chance you get."

We hope the paths of these successful women will inspire you to find and follow your passion.

EOSAM 2020 held as online conference for the first time ever with great success!

The international flagship event of the European Optical Society (EOS), the EOSAM conference, was held in online form during 7-11 September 2020. The initial plan was to celebrate the international conference and industrial exhibition, EOSAM, under the warm sun of Porto, Portugal in 7-11 September 2020, organized together with the Portuguese Society for Optics and photonics, SPOF. However, due to the circumstances with the covid pandemic, we wanted to ensure the safety of our attendees and their families, and made the difficult decision to move the onsite event into online form, for the first time ever in the history of EOSAM.

During the conference week, 7-11 September, EOS offered live and on-demand presentations free of charge for attendees, with a chance to register and view the presentations also after the conference week, free of charge (sessions were open until 25 September).

The conference week included the School of Physics on Optical Metrology, four live plenary talks and over 120 invited and contributed presentations on all the 12 topical meetings, covering all topics of optics and photonics.

  • Publish your research online with EOSAM 2020

    • On Tuesday, 12 may 2020

European Optical Society Annual Meeting (EOSAM) 2020 will be transferred to online form and proceedings are published in September. Submission deadline extended until 10 June.

    Dear all,

As you know, the situation with Covid-19 impacts the in-person events this year. Even though we hope the situation to be better in September, we do not want to risk the safety of our participants and their families. Thus, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person EOSAM meeting in Porto.

However, we want to support our researchers and will provide a platform for authors to publish their research (all topics included). All accepted abstracts will be published in the online conference proceedings in September.

As this year is exceptional, and it is hardly possible to get new scientific findings published fast, to help the researchers, we extended the submission deadline until 10 June 2020.

  • Nomination deadline for Board Elections extended until 31 May

    • On Monday, 27 april 2020

Due to the current circumstances with covid, we wish to give our members more time to send in nominations for the EOS Board Elections. We ask you to send in the nominations by Sunday, 31 MAY 2020.

This year (2020) is an election year for the EOS Board and there are four seats to be filled.  We invite you to nominate candidates for election to the Board.  Nominations may be made either by letter or by e-mail.

If by letter, this must be signed by three EOS members (not including the person nominated).  A letter from the person nominated, accepting the nomination, must also be enclosed (or sent separately).

If by e-mail, each of the three EOS members supporting the nomination must send in a separate e-mail indicating their support for the candidate.  (This is important, as the receipt of three separate e-mails is being accepted in lieu of signatures.)  In addition, the person nominated must send an e-mail accepting the nomination.

Contact details for both letters and e-mails are given below.

Please note that all four people involved (candidate and three supporters) must be members (Full or Associate) of EOS.

Each EOS member is entitled to nominate up to three candidates for election to the Board.  There is no rule to prevent the same three people nominating more than one candidate.  We urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to nominate candidates for the election later this year.

  • Topical meeting on Waves in Complex Photonic Media: POSTPONED

    • On Sunday, 05 april 2020

Unfortunately, the developing COVID-19 situation is forcing us to postpone the workshop "Waves in Complex Photonic Media". While we hope that the situation in June will be much better than it is today, it is important that we act with safety as our primary concern and make determinations on the basis of the information that we have at this time.

We are currently evaluating options for alternative dates. It is however too soon for us to narrow down dates. We will inform about new developments on the event website. We hope you understand the circumstances that have led to this decision, and we wish you all the best during these particularly challenging times.

    Stay safe and healthy,
    Event organizing team
