Delft – The City

Delft is a historic and charming city in the western Netherlands, known for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful canals. It is famous for its association with the renowned 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and the iconic blue-and-white Delftware pottery. The city boasts a vibrant mix of old-world charm and modern innovation, with medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and picturesque canals lined with historic buildings.

Delft is also home to the Royal Delft factory, where traditional ceramics are still produced. The city is small and easily walkable, making it an ideal destination for visitors seeking both history and contemporary attractions. It is located between Rotterdam and The Hague, offering a perfect blend of quiet, academic life and proximity to major Dutch urban centers. Delft is also a hub for students, thanks to the presence of TU Delft, one of the leading universities in technology and engineering.

GETTING TO DELFT

Delft is a town with a privileged location. It is a small town in the middle of the countryside close to the major cities in the Netherlands. You can catch a train at the central station and be in The Hague within 15 minutes, Rotterdam and Leiden in 20, and Amsterdam within 50 minutes. Additionally, you can also go by train to: Antwerp (Belgium) within 1.5 hours, Brussels in 2 hours, and Paris in just 3.5 hours.

If you come by plane, you can choose to fly to Rotterdam The Hague Airport or Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

Plane From Rotterdam The Hague Airport to Delft

The Airport is only a 15-minute drive from Delft. A taxi might be the best option. To calculate the price use their handy website!

Plane From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Delft

From Schiphol, you can easily travel to Delft by train in 40 minutes or by car in 50 minutes.

At the airport, the train terminals are right below the Schiphol Plaza (the airport’s main public entrance hall). You can plan your trip and buy tickets using the ns.nl website or the NS app. Also at Schiphol, you can buy a single paper ticket at the blue-grey ‘Public Transport Tickets’ machines. With this, you can board a train, bus, tram, or metro once. Plan your journey from the airport to your home using the 9292 app to know which train, bus, or tram to use.

If you come from somewhere else, the train is always a good option. The Netherlands has public transportation that is organized and comfortable (i.e.: Nederlandse Spoorwegen (www.ns.nl) — national train, tram, and bus inter/outer city).
