About EOSAM & Previous Events
The European Optical Society Annual Meeting (EOSAM) is a major international scientific conference with an exhibition and industrial program, held in a different location every year. The next EOSAM will be held 9-13 September, 2024 in Naples, Italy.
It was established specifically to provide a platform for experts in the field of optics and photonics, bringing forth new research results, the state of the art, and bridging the gap between research, education, and industry. EOSAM is attended annualy by over 500 top researchers, key leaders, students, and industry experts.
EOSAM has been organized since 2006, initially in Paris. After 2010 it was decided to move EOSAM around Europe, bringing the event into different optics hubs better serving the local communities and at each time creating a unique EOSAM experience for the attendees. Starting in 2020 the EOSAM was made into an annual event, so mark your calendars for September each year!

A Vibrant Gathering of Minds in the Heart of Naples
- On Monday, 04 november 2024
The European Optical Society Annual Meeting, EOSAM 2024, was held in the sunny and captivating city of Naples, Italy, 9-13 September, at the facilities of CESTEV, University of Naples Federico II. It was organized this year in close collaboration with the Italian Society for Optics and Photonics (SIOF), the Italian branch of the European Optical Society (EOS). EOS and SIOF worked together to ensure a meeting with the highest quality and novel research results in different fields of optics.

EOSAM 2023 in Dijon, France
- On Monday, 18 september 2023
EOSAM 2023 was held in the beautiful city of Dijon France, 11-15 September, at the congress center. It was organized this year with the French Optical Society (SFO) that is one of the seventeen national optical societies (NOS) of the European Optical Society (EOS). We worked together to ensure a meeting with the highest quality and novel research results in different fields of optics. Thus, nine topical optical meetings, four focused sessions (on selected hot topics deemed to be of special interest to conference attendees), EU Project Sessions, Early Stage Researcher Sessions, and sessions on the industrial mastering of optical technologies and systems were scheduled in parallel in large rooms or the big auditorium to fit our over 500 attendees. The exhibition and industrial program fostered relations between science and industry. All attendees took benefit of the lunch time, the lunch included in the registration made sure all attendees stayed in same location, for a good and efficient networking. After all, EOSAM is the platform for the European optics and photonics community to meet!
A lot of PhD level students attended the conference, over 30% of the attendees were in fact students. Master-level students were also given a chance to come and join the tutorials on Monday. Ten tutorial speakers took the stage before the official opening of the conference on Tuesday: Sébastien Bidault, Julien Charton, Sara Ducci, John M. Dudley, Oliver Fähnle, Philippe Grelu, Sandrine Lévêque-Fort, Rüdiger Paschotta, Roozbeh Shokri, Antoine Dubrouil. -
EOSAM 2022 brought together photonics experts and students in Porto 12-16 September
- On Friday, 30 september 2022
The European Optical Society Annual Meeting, EOSAM, is a major international scientific conference covering all aspects of optics and photonics that are presented in topical meetings and special sessions. This year, EOSAM 2022 took place in Portugal, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, FEUP, in close collaboration with the Portuguese Society for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics, SPOF, and INESC TEC - Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science. EOS also collaborated with Sedoptica, PhotonicsFinland, Promoptica, and the European Photonics Industry Consortium, EPIC for the event.
The conference was chaired by Manuel Filipe Costa, President of SPOF, and Maite Flores-Arias, Secretary of EOS as General chairs; Orlando Frazao and Susana Novais, INESC-tec as Local Chairs; and Patricia Segonds, President-Elect of EOS and Gilles Pauliat, President of EOS as Program Chairs. The EOS Office coordinated and handled the organization led by the Executive Director, Elina Koistinen, together with Conference Manager Jussi Ahonen and Conference Assistant Tiina Romppanen.
EOSAM 2022 included high-quality program within the following 13 Topical meetings (TOMs), 3 special sessions and an exhibition:

EOSAM 2021 bringing people together again in-person
- On Wednesday, 01 december 2021
The European Optical Society Annual Meeting, EOSAM, is a major international scientific conference covering all aspects of optics and photonics. It is attended by top researchers, key leaders, students, and industry experts. Each year EOSAM moves into different optics hubs better serving the local communities and at each time creating a unique EOSAM experience for the attendees. EOSAM was previously organized in France, Scotland, Germany, Netherlands, and was also planned for Portugal but was held online due to the pandemic.
This year, EOSAM was held on September 13-17 in Rome Italy, bringing back the highly awaited international in-person EOS events. EOS organized the conference in close co-operation with the Societa Italiana di Ottica e Fotonica, SIOF, the Italian optical society Branch member of EOS, and the Universita di Roma La Sapienza. For the first time, EOSAM was held in a hybrid format, successfully mixing online attendees with on-site participants. With over 350 onsite attendees and 180 online attendees, from 33 countries worldwide, this hybrid format was a full success and worth to be repeated in the future!
Onsite participants benefited from an exceptional venue. The meeting was held in the premises of Universita di Roma La Sapienza, in the center of Roma. The conference rooms surrounded the old cloister open onto an inner courtyard. The cloister arcades welcomed an industrial exhibit of 14 booths, the poster sessions, the welcome reception, the numerous coffee breaks, and the everyday lunches. All these activities reinforced the exchanges between the attendants. EOS indeed pays a special attention to the interaction between participants by promoting networking opportunities. One of the nicest was the memorable gala dinner served in the century-old rooms of the Centro Palazzo Rospigliosi conference center.
The quality of the conference was served by the quality of the scientific presentations, 445 in total. These presentations were shared among topical meetings, TOM, and sessions covering most fields of optics and photonics:

EOSAM 2020 online conference a success
- On Friday, 02 october 2020
EOSAM 2020 held as online conference for the first time ever with great success!
The international flagship event of the European Optical Society (EOS), the EOSAM conference, was held in online form during 7-11 September 2020. The initial plan was to celebrate the international conference and industrial exhibition, EOSAM, under the warm sun of Porto, Portugal in 7-11 September 2020, organized together with the Portuguese Society for Optics and photonics, SPOF. However, due to the circumstances with the covid pandemic, we wanted to ensure the safety of our attendees and their families, and made the difficult decision to move the onsite event into online form, for the first time ever in the history of EOSAM.
During the conference week, 7-11 September, EOS offered live and on-demand presentations free of charge for attendees, with a chance to register and view the presentations also after the conference week, free of charge (sessions were open until 25 September).
The conference week included the School of Physics on Optical Metrology, four live plenary talks and over 120 invited and contributed presentations on all the 12 topical meetings, covering all topics of optics and photonics.
